The Book of Overlight has a number of average-power attacks and contains a variety of healing and shielding spells. It eclipses other books in the late game through its innate ability to achieve flight permanently.

Over a period of five turns, an increasing number of stars is dropped in the general area, starting at turn one and ending at four (small stars deal 45 each). On the fifth turn, an extra-large star which deals 125 damage (and creates a big explosion), will land exactly where it was aimed. These stars can be deflected easily by English Summer, Blizzard, or Storm clouds, and shields.

The familiar for the Book of Overlight is the Cherub. Each time it is charged, it allows the player to gain 1HP worth of shield (similar to the Protection Shield spell) per turn, up to 5HP of shield per turn when charged to Level 5, to a maximum of 50HP worth of shields by the cherub. You can still go over 50HP using the Protection Shield.
Familiar specific changes:
Level 1: Protection shields can be infinitely stackable
Level 5: Shining Bolt does 55 damage. Sunder can do 100 damage. Rising Star has a 5 turn cooldown.
